Doctor Khumalo Questions Frosler’s Penalty Selection After Chiefs Exit

Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo has questioned whether defender Reeve Frosler should have been selected to take a penalty in the Amakhosi’s exit from the CAF Confederation Cup.

Speaking on SABC2 after the match, Doc said Frosler’s body language before the kick did not look right. “I said his body language was not a positive one, it was a little sluggish,” he explained.

Chiefs went out after losing 3-2 on penalties to Zambian side Red Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Friday night. The Amakhosi had won the second leg 1-0 thanks to a header from Bradley Cross, which levelled the aggregate score at 1-1 after their first-leg defeat in Ndola.

In the shootout, Lebohang Maboe hit the crossbar with the opening kick. Goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma, starting in place of the injured Renaldo Leaner, then made a save. But Red Arrows goalkeeper Charles Kalumba kept out Frosler’s effort, and substitute Ethan Chislett also struck the bar to end Chiefs’ campaign.

Doc raised a bigger concern about leadership in the squad. He asked whether players feel comfortable enough to speak up when a teammate does not look ready for a high-pressure moment.

“The question is, do we have leadership within the players, because there are certain players that can probably command to say ‘no, sorry coach, I don’t think so and so should take it’,” he said.

He backed this up with a personal story from his playing days at Chiefs. After a poor game, the late Ace Ntsoelengoe stepped in when the coach wanted to give Doc the penalty.

“It happened to me, when I was still playing. I had a bad game and the late Ace Ntsoelengoe, the coach selected me and he said ‘coach, I don’t think you need to give Doc a penalty because I don’t think he had a good game, let’s protect’,” Doc recalled.

His comments come at a difficult time for the club. The loss adds more pressure on coach Fernando Da Cruz after a winless run in domestic competitions and now an early exit from the Confederation Cup. Chiefs will now turn their focus to upcoming league and cup fixtures as they try to rebuild confidence and find the right balance in the team.
