Miguel Cardoso Provides Positive Injury Update on Teboho Mokoena at Mamelodi Sundowns
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has offered an update on Teboho Mokoena’s fitness, revealing that the midfielder is dealing with a ligament problem affecting the inner part of his knee.
Cardoso explained that the injury is not a new concern, as Mokoena had already experienced the problem while representing the South African national team during the recent international break.
The Sundowns coach has, however, expressed optimism about the midfielder’s recovery, describing the injury as a relatively minor issue that should be resolved within a short period.
Speaking about Mokoena’s condition, Cardoso explained that the player had sustained a stretch injury involving the ligament on the inside of his knee while on national team duty.
“The injury for Teboho is not a new one, it’s the same. It means that he had a situation in the national team.
“He had a stretch on the inside ligament. It’s good it’s not a big thing, it will be overcome very, very quickly,” Cardoso said.
The update will likely provide some relief for Sundowns supporters, considering Mokoena’s importance to the team’s midfield. The Bafana Bafana international has established himself as an influential player through his defensive contributions, passing ability and capacity to support attacking movements.
His presence gives Sundowns an important balance in the middle of the pitch, allowing the team to protect its defence while building attacks and controlling possession. His potential absence could therefore affect the coach’s options when selecting the midfield for upcoming matches.
Cardoso’s comments also suggest that Sundowns are managing an existing injury concern rather than dealing with a completely new setback. The club will now monitor the midfielder’s condition to determine when he can safely return to full training and competitive action.
Although the coach has indicated that the problem is not serious, Mokoena’s actual return will depend on his recovery progress and the medical team’s assessment of his fitness.
Sundowns will be keen to avoid rushing the midfielder back before he has fully recovered, particularly given the demands of competing in domestic and continental football.
With Mokoena also an important member of the national team, his fitness remains a significant concern for supporters of both Sundowns and Bafana Bafana.
For now, Cardoso’s assessment offers encouraging news, with the coach expecting the midfielder to overcome the ligament problem relatively quickly. However, confirmation of his availability for the club’s next fixture will depend on further assessments of his condition.
