Famous Kenyan Truck Driver in US Shares How Much He Is Paid per Month
According to a Kenyan businessman, rows of long-haul trailers in Kansas City are parked and not being utilized due to a shortage of qualified drivers. He noted that operators in the area can potentially earn around KSh 1 million monthly.
Kenyan content creator Fanya Mambo Kinuthia visited a trailer park owned by compatriot Ernest Modara, who manages several long-haul trucks, including many 53-foot trailers that remain inactive.
In an online video, Kinuthia asked Modara about a driver’s weekly earnings, which he estimated at around $2,500 or approximately KSh 280,000. Kinuthia calculated that even at the lower end, a driver could earn close to KSh 1 million monthly, pointing out that the demand for drivers is high across various states, not just in Kansas City.
Despite the lucrative pay, Modara’s trailers are still unused. Kinuthia explained that the barrier is not a lack of skilled Kenyan workers but rather the absence of legal avenues for them to enter the U.S. to fill these positions.
He urged Kenyan officials to engage in discussions aimed at establishing pathways for Kenyan truck drivers to obtain the necessary visas and work permits to operate these trailers in the U.S.
While Kinuthia acknowledged the importance of creating jobs in Kenya, he argued that it should not undermine existing overseas opportunities that remain unfulfilled. He described the scenario as a diplomatic shortfall that benefits no one, as skilled drivers remain in Kenya while entrepreneurs like Modara are forced to watch their investments idle.
