Sifuna Speaks Out After Eastleigh Building Collapse, Sends Message of Hope to Trapped Workers

Former ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has expressed concern over the workers trapped following the collapse of a building in Eastleigh, Nairobi, as rescue efforts continue.

In a message shared on social media, Sifuna said he was praying for the safety of the workers and expressed hope that the ongoing rescue operation would produce positive results despite the tragedy.

“We are praying for all those workers trapped in the collapsed building in Eastleigh… We hope there will be silver lining to this otherwise sad story,” Sifuna stated.

His message comes amid growing concern over the fate of workers believed to have been inside the building when it collapsed.

The incident has raised questions about construction safety and the measures put in place to protect workers and residents in Nairobi’s rapidly developing neighbourhoods.

Building collapses often expose concerns about compliance with construction regulations, the quality of building materials and whether developers follow approved plans during construction.

Eastleigh, one of Nairobi’s busiest commercial areas, has experienced significant development over the years, with numerous buildings accommodating businesses, residential tenants and other activities.

The latest incident has therefore drawn attention to the need for strict enforcement of building standards to prevent similar tragedies.

Sifuna’s message has also highlighted the human cost of the incident, with families and colleagues of the trapped workers facing uncertainty as emergency teams work to establish their whereabouts and rescue anyone still alive.

Rescue operations following building collapses can be complicated by unstable structures, heavy debris and the risk of further sections of a building giving way. Emergency responders must therefore work carefully to reach possible survivors while protecting those involved in the operation.

The incident is expected to renew discussions about accountability among property developers and authorities responsible for approving and inspecting buildings.

As rescue efforts continue, attention remains focused on the trapped workers and the possibility of bringing them to safety.

Sifuna’s message reflects the concern shared by Kenyans following the incident, with many hoping that emergency teams will rescue those affected and establish what caused the building to collapse.
