MK Party President Jacob Zuma Shares His Reasons for Removing Sibonelo Nomvalo Amid Allegations.

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, led by former South African president Jacob Zuma, has removed Sibonelo Nomvalo as its secretary-general following allegations that he made significant organisational decisions without consulting the party’s senior leadership.

‎The decision, announced on Thursday, October 22, 2026, takes immediate effect and comes less than two weeks before South Africa’s scheduled local government elections on November 4.

‎According to a statement issued by the party, Nomvalo’s removal followed concerns surrounding the selection of councillor candidates, internal factionalism, matters relating to dual remuneration and delays in delivering campaign materials.

‎The party also accused Nomvalo of establishing high-level deployment committees without the knowledge of the relevant leadership structures.

‎‎Additionally, concerns were raised about alleged changes to the parliamentary caucus and parliamentary administration that were reportedly not communicated to Zuma, national officials or the party’s presidency collective.

‎The MK Party said these developments had raised questions about organisational coordination, internal communication, accountability and compliance with established party procedures.

‎‎The party acknowledged Nomvalo’s contribution to the organisation and requested that he cooperate with the relevant structures to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities.

‎Following his removal, Deputy Secretary-General Lindiwe Mtshali has been appointed acting secretary-general. She will work alongside National Chairperson Mxolisi Phakathi to maintain administrative continuity and coordinate the party’s organisational affairs.

‎National spokesperson Sifiso Mahlangu will also assume additional responsibilities associated with the deputy secretary-general’s office while retaining his spokesperson position.

‎‎Nomvalo was appointed secretary-general in March 2026, replacing Bongani Mncwango. His departure adds to a series of leadership changes within the party since its establishment in December 2023.

‎The latest development also follows previous disagreements within the organisation over leadership appointments and candidate-selection procedures.

‎In September, disgruntled MK Party members protested outside the party’s offices in Durban, alleging that the councillor lists submitted to the Electoral Commission of South Africa did not accurately reflect candidates selected in their communities. The party subsequently announced that the matter would be investigated.

‎The timing of Nomvalo’s removal presents another challenge for the organisation as it prepares for the upcoming local government elections.

‎The party has urged its national, provincial, regional and branch structures to cooperate with the newly appointed officials, emphasising unity, discipline and accountability.

‎Despite losing his position as secretary-general, reports indicate that Nomvalo remains a Member of Parliament.

‎‎The party has not publicly announced any further action regarding his parliamentary membership.
