Wiper leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has condoled with families affected after a multi-storey building under construction collapsed in Eastleigh, Nairobi on Friday afternoon.
In a statement dated October 23rd, Kalonzo said he was deeply dismayed by the incident, adding that his prayers are with the families of those trapped and with the injured.
He thanked the Kenya Red Cross, the Kenya Defence Forces Disaster Response Battalion, the National Disaster Management Unit, the Nairobi County emergency teams and ordinary Kenyans who rushed to help.
Kalonzo urged all agencies to work together without delay, and asked the public to follow instructions from first responders.
He said when the dust settles, Kenyans will ask how a building of that size came to stand, and fall, in a crowded neighbourhood, and that question must be answered honestly.
According to Kalonzo, “Whoever approved, inspected, built or looked away must be identified and held to account, whatever their position or connections.”
He also said Kenyans must never again be buried under buildings that were allowed to go up through corruption and weak enforcement of the law.
