Kenkey Was GH¢3 Under NPP, Now It’s GH¢10 — Moses Abor Fires Shots at NDC Over Rising Cost of Living
The Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Moses Abor, has criticised the current economic situation under the National Democratic Congress (NDC), using the rising price of kenkey to argue that the cost of living has become increasingly burdensome for ordinary Ghanaians.
Moses Abor compared the prices of everyday food items under the previous NPP administration with what consumers reportedly pay under the current NDC government, arguing that the increase raises questions about the economic conditions facing households.
“They said the NPP was not good, but when we were in power, kenkey was GH¢3. Now, kenkey costs GH¢10,” he said.
His comments frame the debate around the cost of living through a familiar staple food that many Ghanaians rely on for their daily meals.
Kenkey is widely consumed across the country and is often accompanied by fish, pepper and other food items. Changes in its price can therefore become a visible measure of the financial pressure experienced by consumers, particularly those with limited incomes.
Abor’s comparison reflects the NPP’s broader criticism of the NDC government’s economic management. By highlighting the reported increase in the price of kenkey, he sought to draw attention to the effect of rising prices on the purchasing power of households.
For many families, food costs form a substantial part of daily expenditure. When the prices of basic meals increase, consumers may find it more difficult to manage household budgets, especially when their incomes do not rise at the same pace.
However, the price of a single food item does not, on its own, provide a complete picture of the economy. A comprehensive assessment of living conditions would also consider inflation, wages, transport fares, utility bills, housing costs and the prices of other essential goods and services.
The comparison also highlights how economic performance can become a central issue in the political contest between Ghana’s two major parties. Both the NPP and NDC have frequently faced public scrutiny over their handling of the economy, particularly when changes in prices affect everyday life.
For the opposition NPP, concerns about the cost of living provide an opportunity to challenge the government’s economic record and question whether its policies are delivering meaningful relief to households.
For the NDC administration, the broader challenge is to demonstrate that its economic policies can improve purchasing power and ease financial pressure on consumers.
Abor’s remarks are likely to resonate with people who have noticed changes in the prices of their regular meals. Nevertheless, verifying the comparison would require reliable price data from the relevant periods and locations.
Ultimately, the kenkey comparison has added another dimension to the political debate over affordability, with the cost of everyday necessities remaining an important measure by which many Ghanaians judge economic management.
