Petrol Imports Crash 30% As Nigerians’ Daily Consumption Hits 44.4 Million Litres
According to a report by DAILY POST on Friday 23 October 2026; Nigeria’s petrol imports declined by 30 per cent in September 2026, even as daily consumption of the product increased to 44.4 million litres.
The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) revealed this in its latest industry statistics released on Thursday.
According to the data, Nigerians consumed an average of 44.4 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, daily in September, up from 41.01 million litres recorded previously.
The increase represents a seven per cent rise in daily petrol consumption during the period under review.
However, petrol imports fell to 10.2 million litres per day in September, representing a 30 per cent decline.
The regulatory authority also reported a reduction in daily petrol receipts, which dropped from 50.5 million litres in August to 38.7 million litres in September, marking a 23 per cent decrease.
Meanwhile, consumption of other petroleum products also recorded notable figures during the month.
The NMDPRA data showed that daily diesel consumption stood at 14.5 million litres, while aviation fuel consumption reached three million litres.
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) consumption was recorded at 5.2 kilotonnes during the period.
The latest figures provide an overview of developments in Nigeria’s petroleum industry, with petrol demand increasing despite the decline in import volumes.
DAILY POST recalls that petrol prices witnessed a slight decrease in September before climbing again in October.
The latest development comes as Nigerians continue to monitor changes in fuel prices, availability and supply across the country.
