Umahi made the statement on Friday during an exclusive interview on Arise Television, describing the 750-kilometre coastal highway as a personal initiative of the President that requires continuity to be completed.

According to the minister, Tinubu’s return to office is crucial to the delivery of the coastal highway and other major road projects across the country.

The former Ebonyi State governor also dismissed reports that the Federal Government had abandoned the coastal highway in favour of the East-West Road.

“If President Tinubu does not come back in 2027 (God forbid), the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will be gone,” Umahi said.

He, however, maintained that the coastal highway project remained intact, insisting that its original design and construction plans could not be altered arbitrarily.

“The 750-kilometre coastal highway is intact and cannot be changed, and nobody has the powers to change it, because it’s already designed and it’s ongoing,” he added.

Umahi further disclosed that Tinubu had approved the reconstruction of an additional 400 kilometres of the East-West Road, stretching from Edo State to Cross River State, alongside the coastal highway project.

He explained that the President directed that the coastal highway should pass through the existing East-West Road corridor rather than require the creation of entirely new alignments.

The minister attributed the decision to the challenging terrain in Ondo State, where construction has encountered significant difficulties.

According to him, some construction pits in the area are more than 100 metres deep, while suitable sharp sand is unavailable even at depths of up to 300 metres.

Umahi’s remarks place the future of the multibillion-naira coastal highway project at the centre of the political debate ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with the minister linking its completion to continuity in Tinubu’s administration.
