“I Will Return to NPP Only If Made Flagbearer for 2028 Elections” – Alan Kyerematen Declares
According to a report by The 1957News on Thursday, October 22, 2026, United Party (UP) leader Alan Kyerematen has indicated that he would consider returning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) only if he were offered the party’s flagbearer position for the 2028 general elections.
The former Trade and Industry Minister made his position known during an interview with DW Africa, where he discussed the possibility of rejoining the NPP after leaving the party in September 2023.
Kyerematen, who was a founding member of the NPP and had been associated with the party since 1992, resigned after raising concerns about what he described as unfair treatment and the influence of certain individuals within the organisation. His departure followed his withdrawal from the party’s presidential primary contest.
After leaving the NPP, he established the Movement for Change as a political platform to pursue his presidential ambition. He subsequently contested the 2024 general elections as an independent presidential candidate under the movement.
In October 2025, the Movement for Change was transformed into the United Party, which received registration from the Electoral Commission to operate as a political party.
During the interview, Kyerematen suggested that his return to the NPP would depend on being given the opportunity to lead the party as its presidential candidate. His position indicates that simply rejoining the party as an ordinary member would not meet the condition he has outlined.
He also maintained that the principles and values promoted by the United Party could offer an alternative approach to addressing Ghana’s development challenges. He argued that the country needs political ideas beyond the longstanding dominance of the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
His comments have renewed discussions about his political future and the possibility of a reconciliation with the NPP ahead of the 2028 elections.
However, Kyerematen’s stated condition makes the possibility of his return dependent on whether the NPP would be willing to accept him as its flagbearer. Any such development would also have implications for the party’s internal processes for selecting its presidential candidate.
For now, his remarks clarify the terms under which he would consider rejoining his former party, while no agreement regarding a return has been established in the information provided.
