Adwoa Safo Declares Bid to Contest Dome-Kwabenya Seat Again

Adwoa Safo Declares Bid to Contest Dome-Kwabenya Seat Again

According to GhanaWeb on Friday, October 23, 2026, former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo has officially declared her intention to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries in the constituency, signalling her desire to return to Parliament in the 2028 general elections.

The announcement marks a significant development in the political future of the former lawmaker, who previously represented Dome-Kwabenya for 12 years before losing the NPP parliamentary primary ahead of the 2024 general elections.

In a statement addressed to party members, constituents and the Ghanaian public, Adwoa Safo explained that her decision followed extensive consultations, personal reflection and engagements with party leadership and executives.

She stated that her commitment to the people of Dome-Kwabenya remained strong and that she believed she still had more to contribute to the constituency’s development.

The former MP had previously indicated that she would not contest the seat again, explaining in March 2025 that she wanted to pursue bigger opportunities after serving the constituency for three consecutive parliamentary terms. However, her latest declaration shows that she has reconsidered that position and is prepared to seek the NPP’s nomination once more.

Adwoa Safo described Dome-Kwabenya as one of Ghana’s fastest-growing constituencies, noting that its expansion has created both opportunities and challenges that require effective leadership and continued development.

Reflecting on her 12 years in Parliament, she highlighted her experience working with residents, traditional leaders, religious leaders, party members and other stakeholders to address the needs of the constituency.

She also referred to the NPP’s electoral performance in Dome-Kwabenya during the 2012, 2016 and 2020 general elections. According to her, the party recorded 63,373 votes in 2012, 65,488 in 2016 and 75,041 in 2020.

Adwoa Safo attributed the party’s performance during those elections to the collective efforts of its members, supporters and constituents rather than her individual contribution alone.

She stressed that unity within the NPP would be essential as the party prepares for the next general elections. She called on party members and supporters to work together and remain committed to the party’s principles and objectives.

The former lawmaker also expressed her desire to create more opportunities for young people, support families and ensure that the concerns of ordinary residents receive the attention they deserve.

Her declaration comes after the NPP lost the Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections. The constituency is currently represented by Faustina Elikplim Akurugu of the NDC.

Before the 2024 elections, Adwoa Safo lost the NPP parliamentary primary to Mike Oquaye Jnr, who subsequently contested the general election but failed to retain the seat for the party.

Her decision to return to the race could therefore introduce a new dimension to the NPP’s preparations to reclaim the constituency in 2028. However, she must first secure the party’s parliamentary nomination before becoming its candidate for the general election.

Adwoa Safo has called on party members, stakeholders and residents to engage with her respectfully as discussions about the constituency’s future leadership continue.

In reaffirming her connection to the area, she declared: “Dome-Kwabenya is home. It has always been home. My commitment to its people remains unwavering, and my resolve to serve remains steadfast.”

Her announcement has placed her political comeback firmly on the agenda as the NPP looks ahead to its next parliamentary primaries. Whether she will secure the party’s ticket and return to Parliament will depend on the outcome of the internal contest and the subsequent general election.
