Emotional Farewell in Asafo: Woman Laid in State While Pounding Fufu

Residents of Asafo in the Ashanti Region turned out in large numbers on April 26, 2025, to mourn and celebrate the life of Madam Agyiwaah, a woman who was widely admired within the community.

Her funeral attracted particular attention because of the unusual way in which her body was presented. Rather than being placed in the conventional lying position, Madam Agyiwaah was displayed sitting upright in colourful traditional clothing, with a pestle placed in her hands.

The family explained that the arrangement was meant to honour the activity that had become closely associated with her life. She was a respected fufu maker who regularly prepared the popular Ghanaian dish at family celebrations, community gatherings and other events.

Those who attended said the tribute was both emotional and symbolic. The representation reminded many mourners of Madam Agyiwaah’s dedication to cooking and her reputation as a hardworking and welcoming woman.

A resident who attended the ceremony described the moment as particularly moving, saying it created an impression that Madam Agyiwaah was still carrying out the work she had enjoyed during her lifetime.

The funeral drew people from Asafo as well as neighbouring communities. Several mourners praised the family for finding a personal way to celebrate the deceased and preserve the memory of what made her special.

The ceremony reflects a broader practice increasingly seen at some Ghanaian funerals, where families create customised tributes based on the occupations, interests or personalities of those who have passed away.

Madam Agyiwaah’s final tribute, showing her in the role for which she was best known, is expected to remain a memorable part of her story and a lasting image for those who attended her farewell.
