Duru, who died on Friday, October 23, 2026, following a brief illness, became a household name after playing Ahanna in the 1990s film Rattlesnake. His family announced his death on his official Instagram page.

Beyond his memorable performances, however, the actor had a multifaceted career that encompassed filmmaking, academic pursuits, humanitarian work, faith-based service and mentorship.

From his encounter with legendary playwright Ola Rotimi to his decision to settle in Abuja, here are 10 things many Nigerians did not know about the late actor.

Although widely identified with Nollywood and his southeastern Nigerian roots, Duru was born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State.

He completed his primary and secondary education in Cameroon before moving to Nigeria to pursue higher education.

He hailed from Eziama in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, maintaining his Nigerian identity despite being born and raised partly outside the country.

Duru initially aspired to study Law or Mass Communication, but his university admission plans took a different turn after he sat for JAMB three times. He said the cut-off marks kept rising, and he eventually accepted an opportunity to study Theatre Arts.

What began as an alternative to his original academic ambitions became the foundation for a career spanning more than three decades in Nollywood.

While many viewers associate Duru with Rattlesnake, his film career began with an earlier production.

Duru offered a different account of the film’s production timeline in a January 2025 interview with Punch. He recalled that his first movie, which he referred to as The Missing Mask, was shot around 1992 or 1993; however, some published biographies date his film debut to 1989

According to the actor, he was living in Choba after completing his first degree when producers from Aba approached him about appearing in an Igbo-language film.

He described the opportunity as a case of preparation meeting opportunity, explaining that his professional training had prepared him for the role.

One of the most revealing stories Duru shared about his career involved legendary Nigerian playwright Ola Rotimi.

In a January 2025 interview, Duru recalled performing in Rotimi’s 1992 stage play, Spokesman for the Oracle.

During the performance, he broke a glass with his hand and sustained an injury. Although Rotimi was impressed by the performance, he reprimanded the young actor for concealing the cut and blood, stressing the importance of safety on stage.

Duru recalled that Rotimi subsequently drove him home and prepared yam and stew for him.

The actor said he was surprised when the playwright, who had just scolded him, showed him such kindness.

Duru later attempted to wash the plates after eating, despite Rotimi having told him not to. When Rotimi discovered this, he offered the advice Duru would remember throughout his career.

“He told me, ‘You are a bloody good actor, but don’t let it get into your head,” Duru recounted.

Duru’s talents extended well beyond appearing in front of the camera.

He was an actor, producer, director, writer and singer. He also worked as an event manager, master of ceremonies, consultant and stage manager.

In a 2007 interview, Duru explained why he combined several creative pursuits.

“I have always kicked against the notion of ‘jack of all trades and master of none’,” he said, arguing that the different aspects of entertainment complemented one another.

His background in theatre, he explained, made it possible to combine acting with event hosting, comedy and other creative activities.

He also disclosed in his 2025 interview that he recorded jingles and voice-overs, conducted masterclasses and worked as a consultant.

At a time when Lagos was regarded as the centre of Nigeria’s entertainment industry, Duru chose to relocate to Abuja.

In a 2008 interview, the actor explained that he wanted a peaceful environment in which to raise his family without the pressure of trying to impress people because of his celebrity status.

“I am not a crowd follower,” he said, explaining that he preferred to make decisions based on his principles rather than follow prevailing trends.

He also spoke about finding fulfilment and strengthening his relationship with God after moving to the Federal Capital Territory.

Duru’s Christian faith was an important part of his life and public identity.

He is a devout Christian who served as a Sunday school teacher and youth minister at Family Worship Centre in Abuja.

The profile also credited him with approximately 24 years of service and mentorship in the church’s youth department at the time of publication in 2025.

His faith influenced how he approached his profession, personal relationships and difficult experiences.

In his January 2025 interview, he explained that his approach to life was rooted in spirituality and described God as his fundamental source of strength and support.

He also spoke about the importance of continuously improving his acting skills, treating every performance as an opportunity to learn.

Duru also used his professional experience in initiatives beyond filmmaking.

An earlier profile published in 2010 also described his involvement in work with organisations including UNICEF, USAID-supported programmes, LEAP Africa, COMPASS and the BBC.

The profile linked his activities to public awareness, child health and efforts to improve the welfare and educational opportunities of African children.

Duru was also involved in the professional structures that supported the Nigerian film industry.

He also served as chairman of the guild’s Abuja chapter.

Beyond the Actors Guild, the profile identified him as a former coordinator of the Directors Guild of Nigeria and a member of professional advisory bodies connected to theatre and development communication.

One of the most painful experiences Duru spoke publicly about was the death of his son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024.

The actor announced the loss on Instagram, describing his son as his “champ” and “lion” and writing that he would continue to love him even in death.

In a January 2025 interview, Duru reflected on how the loss had changed his outlook on life.

He explained that the experience had deepened his understanding of family, faith and the limits of human control.

“It has deepened my perspective and outlook on life,” he said.

Duru added that his faith had not diminished following the tragedy.

He recalled returning to church to conduct a service the day after his son’s burial, explaining that he wanted to reaffirm his faith despite his grief.
