Musa: Security, Good Governance Critical to Nigeria’s Trillion-Dollar Economy

By Emmanuel Kwada Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has identified national security, good governance and strong institutions as critical foundations for achieving the country’s ambition of building a trillion-dollar economy.

Musa made the remarks while delivering a keynote address titled “National Security: Pathway to a Trillion-Dollar Economy” at the 56th Annual Accountants’ Conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), held at the Bola Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja. Addressing accountants, policymakers and business leaders, the minister stressed that national security should not be viewed solely through the lens of military operations and law enforcement but also as a key driver of economic growth. He explained that a secure environment protects human capital, safeguards critical infrastructure and creates the stability investors need to commit resources to long-term business ventures. “No investor commits capital where lives and assets are not safe, and no economy grows beyond the reach of its security,” Musa said. The defence minister acknowledged that Nigeria continues to face security challenges, including attacks on communities, highway kidnappings and isolated insurgent activities. However, he expressed optimism that ongoing operations by the Armed Forces of Nigeria were contributing to efforts to restore stability across economic corridors, agricultural belts and industrial zones. Musa said improving security in these areas was essential to protecting livelihoods, strengthening food production, supporting businesses and expanding economic opportunities. Aligning his remarks with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the minister outlined several priorities for connecting national security with economic development. These include protecting strategic economic assets, strengthening governance, investing in human capital development, promoting financial discipline in defence spending, improving cybersecurity and financial intelligence, and developing Nigeria’s domestic defence industry. He noted that effective coordination between security institutions and other sectors of the economy would be necessary to translate security improvements into sustainable economic progress. The minister also announced the establishment of a joint Ministry of Defence–ICAN Implementation Committee to develop collaborative frameworks based on proposals presented by ICAN President, Hajia Queensley Seghosime. The initiative is expected to strengthen cooperation between the defence sector and professional accountants, particularly in areas relating to financial accountability and the effective management of resources. Musa’s remarks highlight the connection between security, institutional credibility and economic performance, as Nigeria continues to pursue its ambition of building a trillion-dollar economy. Achieving that target, however, will require sustained investment, effective public institutions, improved security and policies that encourage businesses to expand, create jobs and contribute to national development. 📰 Get Latest News Updates Join our Telegram group and receive breaking and trending news updates directly on your phone.
