BREAKING: Nollywood Mourns Veteran Actor Francis Duru as Family Announces Death at 57
By Emmanuel Kwada Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57 following a brief illness, with his death prompting an outpouring of grief from family members, colleagues and fans.
The actor’s family announced his passing in a statement shared on his verified Instagram page on Friday, October 23, 2026, expressing appreciation to Nigerians for their prayers, love and support during the difficult period. “We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen,” the statement read. One of the most emotional tributes came from his son, who described the late actor as his “superhero, my governor, my father,” before concluding his message with the words, “I LOVE YOU SO MUCH.” The tribute has drawn attention to the personal loss suffered by the family following the death of the respected actor, whose career spanned several decades in the Nigerian film industry. Duru’s death comes months after he publicly dismissed rumours that he was seriously ill. In June 2026, the actor addressed a viral video that had raised concerns about his health, insisting that the footage did not accurately represent his condition. “I have never been that sick and will never be. And by God’s grace, we keep getting stronger and stronger,” he said at the time. His death has also been confirmed by the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, who paid tribute to the late actor. Born on July 27, 1969, Duru built a career in Nollywood beginning in the late 1980s. He gained wider recognition in 1995 for his role as Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the acclaimed film directed by the late Amaka Igwe. Over the years, he became a familiar face in Nigerian films and earned respect for his contributions to acting and the development of the country’s entertainment industry. In 2020, he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa. His passing marks a significant loss to Nollywood, where he spent decades entertaining audiences and contributing to the growth of Nigerian cinema. As tributes continue to emerge, fans and colleagues are remembering him for his work on screen, while his family mourns the loss of a husband and father. Funeral arrangements had not been announced in the initial reports of his death. đź“° Get Latest News Updates Join our Telegram group and receive breaking and trending news updates directly on your phone.
