Mudavadi,Wetang’ula Face Growing Pressure as Sifuna, Natembeya Challenge Their Grip on Western Kenya

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula are facing mounting political pressure in Western Kenya as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya intensify efforts to reshape the region’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The two veteran politicians have responded by promoting regional unity and defending their support for President William Ruto, while questioning whether emerging leaders possess the experience needed to lead the country.

Mudavadi has criticised Sifuna’s efforts to establish a new political party, arguing that the limited time remaining before the election makes it difficult for a new outfit to build sufficient national support.

He maintains that leadership should be earned through political experience rather than sudden popularity, warning that Sifuna’s presidential ambitions could prove unrealistic.

Wetang’ula has similarly insisted that the presidency demands proven leadership and experience. He has declared his intention to pursue the top seat in 2032, arguing that Western Kenya could have a realistic opportunity to produce a president after the next electoral cycle.

The Ford Kenya leader has therefore rallied behind Ruto’s re-election bid, saying the region’s political interests must be considered in future power-sharing negotiations.

Speaking during an empowerment event in Webuye West, Bungoma County, Wetang’ula said he was prepared to continue the political journey associated with regional figures such as Masinde Muliro and Michael Kijana Wamalwa.

However, Sifuna, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi and Natembeya have challenged the established leaders, questioning their record after years in public office.

Political commentator Raphael Welimo says Western Kenya’s political mood remains enthusiastic but cautious as competing camps seek to win public support.

With the 2027 elections approaching, the contest could determine whether the region’s traditional political heavyweights retain their influence or face a significant shift in political leadership.
