KEBS Cracks Down On Mitumba Traders After Banned Used Undergarments Are Seized At Entry

The Kenya Bureau of Standards has warned mitumba traders against bringing prohibited second-hand clothing into the country. The warning follows the interception of a consignment that contained used undergarments.

In a statement on Thursday, October 22, KEBS said its officers found the banned items during an inspection on Wednesday, October 21. The bureau directed importers to make sure their consignments do not carry restricted clothing.

KEBS listed used briefs, brassieres, camisoles, socks, stockings and swimwear among the prohibited items. It said the crackdown will continue to protect consumers and ensure compliance with national standards.

The bureau said it inspects all imported used clothing and footwear consignments. It added that every consignment goes through a full inspection to confirm it meets the required standards.

The ban on used undergarments dates back to at least 2004. The issue was raised in Parliament at the time and the government then imposed the restriction.

Lawmakers voiced concern over health risks linked to imported used underwear. These include fungal infections. The rules aim to address hygiene and public health fears over clothing that touches sensitive parts of the body.

Other banned items include used nightwear such as pyjamas, nightdresses and nightgowns. Hospital wear and used bath towels are also on the list.

Kenya brings in most of its mitumba from overseas. China supplied more than half of the shipments in 2023. Other suppliers include the United States, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Lithuania and India.

Anyone who wants to import mitumba must register with the government. They are required to provide business details and a KRA PIN. They must also give contact information and the location of their warehouse.
