Ofei was appointed head coach of the Black Meteors after being relieved of his duties as an assistant coach of the Black Stars, with the task of preparing the team for the Olympic Games qualifiers.

However, Ackah has expressed reservations about the appointment, questioning Ofei’s familiarity with Ghana Premier League players and his record of giving opportunities to locally based talents.

“I have never seen Desmond Ofei at a Ghana Premier League match, yet he’s being backed to lead the U-23s [Black Meteors]. He showed little faith in local players at the U-20 level [Black Satellites],” Ackah told Asempa FM.

The veteran football administrator also criticised what he believes is a recurring pattern of decisions that undermine the development of young Ghanaian footballers.

“Must we keep recycling the same mistakes while our local talents suffer?” he added.

Ackah’s comments have reignited debate over the selection of locally based players for Ghana’s youth national teams and the need for coaches to monitor the domestic league more closely.

The Black Meteors are considered an important pathway for emerging talents seeking to establish themselves in the senior national team, the Black Stars.

Ackah’s concerns centre on whether sufficient attention is being paid to players in the Ghana Premier League, particularly those who could strengthen the national team at youth level.

He believes Ofei’s approach to player selection during his time with the Black Satellites raises questions about whether the coach will give domestic-based players adequate opportunities in his new role.

Meanwhile, the Black Meteors will face Libya in the second round of the Olympic Games qualifiers as Ghana seek to return to the Olympic Games for the first time since 2004.
