Johannesburg Opens Automotive Hub to Support Alexandra Businesses
City of Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero says the municipality is deliberately creating markets to help small and medium-sized businesses grow, reach new customers and access opportunities in the wider economy.
Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of the Alexandra Township Automotive Hub, north of Johannesburg, Morero said the facility would help local entrepreneurs enter the automotive industry market.
The hub has 17 workshops and is intended to support local automotive entrepreneurs to formalise their businesses, access wider markets and create sustainable jobs.
It is designed to provide businesses with a base from which they can develop their services and connect with opportunities in the sector.
Morero said the City was working to ensure that small businesses were not only established but also had access to markets where they could grow.
Creating opportunities for entrepreneurs to secure customers and expand their operations is a key part of the municipality’s approach, he said.
The automotive hub is one example of the City’s efforts to support township businesses. By providing dedicated facilities, the municipality aims to help entrepreneurs move towards more formal operations and strengthen their ability to participate in the local economy.
The project also seeks to support employment by helping businesses become more sustainable.
As local firms expand, they may be better placed to retain workers and create additional jobs, while providing services to customers in Alexandra and beyond.
Morero said the City was also developing an investment unit that would explore international markets.
The unit is expected to look at ways to connect local businesses with opportunities outside South Africa, potentially widening the range of markets available to entrepreneurs.
The mayor’s comments reflect the City’s broader aim of linking business support with access to customers and investment.
For small and medium-sized enterprises, market access can be as important as infrastructure or funding, particularly for businesses seeking to formalise and scale up.
The Alexandra Township Automotive Hub will focus on entrepreneurs operating in the automotive sector, a field that includes a range of services and businesses.
The 17 workshops are intended to provide space for local operators to develop their work and build a stronger presence in the industry.
The City says the facility will help entrepreneurs access a wider market, while the planned investment unit will explore international opportunities.
Together, the initiatives are intended to support business growth and create pathways for local firms to reach customers beyond their immediate communities.
Morero said the municipality was deliberately creating markets rather than leaving small businesses to find opportunities on their own.
The City’s approach, he said, is to help entrepreneurs connect with the networks and customers they need to grow.
The launch of the hub marks a new step in the municipality’s efforts to support township enterprise.
Its success will depend on whether local businesses can use the workshops to formalize, attract customers and build sustainable operations.
