Mamelodi Sundowns Urge Patience With New Signing Lazola Maku
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has urged supporters to give new signing Lazola Maku enough time to adjust to life at the club, stressing that the young midfielder should not be expected to secure a starting position immediately.
The 19-year-old South African joined the reigning Premier Soccer League champions as a free agent after leaving Siwelele at the end of the previous season. His arrival was confirmed on October 20, 2026, as Sundowns strengthened their squad with one of the country’s promising young midfielders.
Cardoso acknowledged Maku’s talent but explained that adapting to Sundowns’ playing style and expectations would take time. The Portuguese coach also highlighted the intense competition in midfield, where several established players are fighting for regular opportunities.
“It’s not easy to arrive at Sundowns and have a place automatically. Even Jayden had difficulties imposing himself immediately, so don’t put pressure on the boy, let him settle,” Cardoso said.
The coach emphasised that giving Maku time to settle should not be interpreted as a lack of confidence in his abilities. Instead, the club wants him to become comfortable with his new teammates, understand the technical staff’s expectations and gradually adapt to the demands of playing for one of Africa’s leading clubs.
Maku arrives at Chloorkop with valuable experience at youth international level. He was part of South Africa’s Under-20 team that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025 and later captained the national side during the 2026 COSAFA Under-20 Championship.
He also represented South Africa at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile, further strengthening his reputation as a promising midfield prospect.
However, securing regular minutes at Sundowns will be challenging. The club boasts several experienced midfielders, meaning Maku must demonstrate his quality in training and take advantage of opportunities when they arise.
Former Sundowns midfielder Roger Feutmba has also stressed the importance of hard work, advising the youngster to remain prepared and compete strongly for his place.
For Maku, the move represents an important step in his career, offering an opportunity to develop alongside established professionals while competing for domestic and continental honours.
Cardoso’s message is clear: Sundowns believe in the teenager’s potential, but his progress will depend on patience, adaptation and consistent performances rather than immediate expectations.
