Damang Gold Mine to channel proceeds from commercial crops into community development
Damang Gold Mine Ltd says proceeds from the sale of commercial crops cultivated on rehabilitated mining land will be channelled into its foundation account to support development projects in host communities.
The company’s Manager for Environment, Dr Desmond Asare, said the initiative forms part of efforts to restore mined lands and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for residents after mining activities end.
He said the company had begun reclaiming about 140 acres of land, including 125 acres earmarked for oil palm cultivation.
Speaking on a special edition of Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen in Tarkwa-Damang, Dr Asare said the commercial farming initiative was expected to create jobs and improve the livelihoods of people in the surrounding communities.
“We have a lot of commercial crops. Our mandate is to restructure the land after mining. We have about 140 acres that we have started retooling, including 125 acres of oil palm,” he said.
He explained that revenue generated from selling the produce would be paid into the Damang Foundation account to support community development.
According to him, the accumulated funds would enable the mine’s management team to determine and prioritise projects that would benefit the host communities.
Dr Asare said the initiative would help ensure that rehabilitated mining sites remained productive while providing economic benefits beyond the lifespan of mining operations.
The programme forms part of broader efforts to link land rehabilitation with livelihood creation and community development around Damang Gold Mine, which is operated by Engineers and Planners, an indigenous Ghanaian mining and construction company owned by Ibrahim Mahama.
