I’ve Heard About Sarkodie, but I’m So Surprised by How Fluently He Speaks English — KNUST Lecturer

Nana Adjei Ntim Gyakari, a lecturer in Chieftaincy and Governance at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has expressed surprise at the fluency of Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie in English after meeting the award-winning musician in person for the first time.

The lecturer made the remark while reflecting on his encounter with the rapper, admitting that although he had heard about Sarkodie before, he had never met him personally until recently.

According to Nana Adjei Ntim Gyakari, his first face-to-face encounter with the musician left him impressed by the way he communicated in English, something he said he had not previously experienced firsthand.

He stated, “I’ve heard about Sarkodie, but this is the first time I’ve seen him in person, and I’m so shocked by how fluently he speaks English!”

The comment has brought attention to Sarkodie’s communication skills beyond his achievements in music, with the lecturer highlighting an aspect of the rapper’s personality that surprised him during their meeting.

Sarkodie, born Michael Owusu Addo, is one of Ghana’s most prominent musicians and has built a successful career through his contributions to hip-hop and rap music, earning recognition both locally and internationally.

Over the years, he has established himself as a major figure in Ghana’s entertainment industry, releasing songs, collaborating with artistes from different countries and performing on stages before audiences across the world.

While many people primarily associate him with his rap performances and lyrical abilities, the lecturer’s remarks focused on his spoken English and the impression he made during their first personal interaction.

The statement also draws attention to the difference between knowing a public figure through music, media appearances and public discussions and having the opportunity to engage with that person directly.

For celebrities such as Sarkodie, public perceptions are often shaped by their artistic work and the personalities they present through entertainment, but personal encounters can offer people a different understanding of their communication style and character.

As a musician who has spent years working in an industry that requires interviews, international collaborations and interactions with different audiences, Sarkodie has had opportunities to communicate in various professional and social settings.

Nana Adjei Ntim Gyakari’s comment reflects his personal reaction to meeting the rapper and hearing him speak in person, particularly because it was their first direct encounter despite his prior knowledge of the musician.

The lecturer’s observation has therefore placed the spotlight on Sarkodie’s spoken communication skills, offering a perspective on the rapper that goes beyond his well-known career in the Ghanaian music industry.
