Asiedu Nketiah Makes Big Decision in NDC Re-election

National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has decided not to contest for another term, setting the stage for a competitive race to succeed him in the party’s upcoming national executive elections.

The decision has also fuelled speculation about his possible interest in the NDC’s presidential flagbearership ahead of the party’s 2027 contest, although no official declaration of such an ambition has been indicated in the report.

Nominations for the party’s national executive positions closed on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, with 137 aspirants reportedly obtaining nomination forms to contest various positions.

According to information cited by Graphic Online, five candidates are expected to compete for the national chairmanship position, which Mr Asiedu Nketiah will leave after serving one term.

The contenders are former Odododiodoo Member of Parliament Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, former Greater Accra Regional Minister Nii Armah Ashietey, former NDC National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, National Vice Chairman Sofo Azorka, and former Minister of Local Government Akwasi Opong-Fosu.

Mr Ofosu Ampofo’s nomination forms were reportedly collected by some party members, adding his name to the list of potential contenders for the position.

The impending election is expected to be an important moment for the NDC as it prepares to choose its next crop of national executives and determine the leadership that will oversee the party’s organisational activities.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah’s decision to step aside has further intensified political discussions about the party’s future leadership, particularly in relation to the next presidential flagbearership race.

However, the immediate focus remains on the national executive elections and the contest to determine who will take over the chairmanship.

With five aspirants reportedly in the race, the coming weeks are expected to bring further developments as the party advances its internal electoral process.
