Matiang’i Left Out as Gakuya Predicts Three Opposition Leaders Who Will Finish the Race Together

Embakasi North Member of Parliament James Gakuya has expressed confidence that Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will remain together as the opposition continues positioning itself ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gakuya’s remarks have added to the growing debate about possible political alliances and the leaders who could unite to challenge President William Ruto in the next presidential election.

Speaking about the emerging political arrangements, Gakuya said he believed Kalonzo, Sifuna and Gachagua would complete the political journey together. However, he expressed uncertainty about the position of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, suggesting that his role in the anticipated alliance remains unclear.

“I know Kalonzo, Sifuna and Gachagua will finish this journey together. As for my brother Matiang’i, I really don’t know,” Gakuya stated.

His comments come at a time when opposition leaders are engaging in political consultations and exploring possible partnerships ahead of the 2027 polls.

Kalonzo has remained a key figure in opposition politics, while Gachagua has continued building his political influence following his removal from office as Deputy President in 2024. Sifuna, meanwhile, has attracted attention through his political activities and growing association with leaders advocating for a united opposition.

Matiang’i has also featured prominently in discussions about the opposition’s presidential plans, with his name frequently mentioned among potential contenders seeking to challenge Ruto.

Gakuya’s remarks raise questions about whether the opposition will eventually agree on a common presidential candidate and establish a working arrangement acceptable to all major political players.

Although his prediction points to a possible alliance involving Kalonzo, Sifuna and Gachagua, the final political configuration will depend on negotiations, individual ambitions and the willingness of the leaders to compromise.

With the 2027 General Election approaching, Kenyans will be watching closely to see whether these political figures can maintain their relationships and turn their discussions into a formidable electoral coalition.
