Ibrahim Mahama has done better for Damang than Newmont in 22 years in Kenyasi – Abronye declares
According to Abronye, Ibrahim Mahama’s Engineers & Planners (E&P) has done better for Damang than Newmont in their 22 years of operation.
He argued that the developmental impact of E&P at Damang surpasses what foreign-owned mining companies have achieved in their respective operational areas over several decades.
Abronye, in his commentary, singled out Newmont’s operations in Ahafo, highlighting that the development associated with E&P at Damang exceeds what Newmont has delivered to its host communities over approximately 20 years.
Speaking on Ohia TV in a video shared on X, Abronye stated, “If we’re to be truthful, the Damang that we made so much noise about; Ibrahim Mahama, the report coming in shows that Ibrahim Mahama has done better for Damang in terms of development than Newmont has done for Kenyasi in their twenty-two years of operation”
Abronye further highlighted that Ghana stands to benefit more from entrusting its gold resources to capable indigenous entrepreneurs such as Ibrahim Mahama than from relying predominantly on multinational mining companies.
According to Abronye, Ghanaian ownership could promote greater local investment, employment creation, infrastructure development and retention of mineral wealth within the national economy.
Abronye’s shocking endorsement is particularly significant given his history of political opposition to Ibrahim Mahama’s mining interests.
It will be recalled that in 2017, the concession involving Exton Cubic Group Limited, which had engaged Engineers & Planners, became the subject of intense political and legal controversy.
The NPP Bono regional chairman was among those who publicly challenged the arrangement.
However, Poyoo, a member of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, has said the next New Patriotic Party (NPP) government would investigate Ibrahim Mahama over the Damang Mine.
According to Poyoo, concerns remain over whether the required parliamentary approval was obtained, adding that he believes the matter should be subjected to further scrutiny.
Speaking to journalists, Poyoo boldly stated, “We are saying it categorically, Damang Mine NPP will investigate. The Supreme Court made a categorical decision that before one is given a mining lease, they need to have parliamentary approval.
Ibrahim Mahama, the Damang Mine that was given to him did he have parliamentary approval before giving gold to the Goldbod? I rest my case”.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim Mahama, following his company’s acquisition of the Damang Mine concession, has announced his ambitious plans for the area.
In a post shared on X by the Ghana Chronicles, Ibrahim Mahama’s ambitious plan for Damang is listed after the takeover.
The post read, “What Ibrahim Mahama is set to deliver for Damang and its catchment communities:
Construction of a concrete road from Damang to Cape Coast
Renovation of existing schools and construction of new ones
Construction of inner roads within Damang
Introduction of annual bonuses for catchment communities
Provision of scholarships for tertiary education
Launch of apprenticeship programmes for local residents”.
