Heavy Rains Loom in 45 Counties as Met Warns of Possible Flash Floods
The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned residents in 45 counties to prepare for rainfall expected between October 22 and 29, 2026, with isolated thunderstorms raising concerns about possible flash floods in some areas.
The forecast comes as changing weather conditions continue to affect different parts of the country. Residents have been urged to remain cautious, particularly in areas where heavy downpours could occur within a short period.
According to the forecast, some locations may experience intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. Such conditions can cause water levels to rise quickly, especially in areas with poor drainage, low-lying settlements and regions near rivers.
Flash floods remain a major concern because they can develop suddenly, leaving people with little time to move to safer locations. Motorists, pedestrians and residents living near waterways are therefore advised to take extra precautions whenever heavy rain begins.
People travelling during the forecast period should also remain alert to changing road conditions. Flooded roads can become dangerous, while strong water currents may sweep away vehicles and pedestrians attempting to cross affected sections.
Residents have been encouraged to monitor official weather updates throughout the week and follow guidance issued by relevant authorities. Families living in flood-prone areas should consider identifying safer places to move to if water levels rise near their homes.
Farmers are also advised to follow local weather information when planning field activities, as rainfall patterns may affect harvesting, transportation and other agricultural operations.
Meanwhile, members of the public should avoid walking or driving through flooded areas, even when the water appears shallow. Blocked drainage channels should be reported to the relevant authorities to help reduce the risk of flooding in residential areas.
The October 22–29 forecast highlights the importance of preparedness as the country experiences the rainy season. Although rainfall can support farming and replenish water supplies, intense downpours may cause damage when communities are unprepared.
Kenyans are encouraged to stay informed, take weather warnings seriously and prioritise safety as the forecast period continues.
