“We Are Not Sending Anyone To The North, We Are Sacking Them” — President Mahama On Flood Issues
President John Dramani Mahama has announced strict measures against local government officials who authorise buildings in areas vulnerable to flooding, warning that those found responsible will be removed from office instead of being transferred.
Speaking during a Diaspora Town Hall Meeting, Mahama stated that his government would no longer accept the approval of construction projects along waterways and drainage systems.
He warned that officials who fail to uphold planning laws and expose residents to danger would lose their positions.
The President’s warning comes as Ghana continues to face frequent flooding, which has claimed lives, forced people from their homes and damaged businesses, residential properties and public facilities.
Experts have repeatedly pointed to illegal developments in waterways and inadequate enforcement of building regulations as key causes of the recurring disasters.
Local government authorities are responsible for examining building permit applications and ensuring that proposed developments comply with planning requirements.
Mahama stressed that officials who approve buildings in flood-prone areas contribute to avoidable risks and compromise the safety of the public.
The directive demonstrates the administration’s determination to hold local government officials accountable for their decisions. Those found to have neglected their duties or violated regulations in granting building permits will face stringent disciplinary measures.
Mahama explained that the policy is intended to prevent loss of life and damage to property by ensuring that planning regulations are followed. He emphasised that public officials must act responsibly, uphold the law and prioritise the welfare of the communities they serve.
The announcement has also intensified public discussion about responsible urban development, environmental conservation and the need to enforce building laws more effectively.
Stronger implementation of these measures is considered essential to reducing flood risks and protecting communities throughout Ghana.
