Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Sergeant Major, Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) Haji Bwana Omar, continues to serve the country despite attaining the mandatory retirement age, underscoring the military’s confidence in one of its most experienced and decorated servicemen.

WO1 Haji was appointed the KDF Sergeant Major in 2024 following the death of his predecessor, WO1 Elijah Aspro Koranga. The appointment placed him at the pinnacle of the KDF’s non-commissioned ranks, making him the senior-most enlisted soldier responsible for advising the Chief of the Defence Forces on the welfare, discipline and professional development of service members.

His appointment came after an illustrious career spanning more than four decades. Having enlisted in the Kenya Defence Forces in 1985, Haji is now serving in his 41st year, making him one of the longest-serving soldiers in the country’s military history. Before assuming the top enlisted post, he served as the Kenya Navy Sergeant Major for eight years from 2016, where he earned a reputation for professionalism, mentorship and unwavering commitment to military excellence.

Throughout his career, WO1 Haji has been involved in several key military operations, with his contribution during Operation Sledge Hammer in Somalia standing out as one of the defining moments of his service. The operation, which targeted Al-Shabaab militants, required close coordination between KDF units and allied forces, with senior non-commissioned officers playing a crucial role in maintaining troop morale, discipline and operational effectiveness.

Military insiders describe Haji as a calm but firm leader whose vast operational experience has made him an invaluable asset to the KDF. His rise from a junior recruit to the highest enlisted office reflects decades of dedication, resilience and exemplary service.

His continued stay in uniform beyond the normal retirement age is viewed by many within defence circles as a testament to the immense value the KDF places on his institutional knowledge and leadership at a time when the military continues to modernize and strengthen its operational capabilities.

As the Kenya Defence Forces navigate evolving security challenges both within the region and beyond, WO1 Haji Bwana Omar remains a towering figure whose experience, discipline and leadership continue to shape the next generation of Kenyan soldiers.
