I’m No Longer NPP—Now I Strongly Support President Mahama’s Third-Term Agenda – Omanhene Vows
Ghanaian broadcaster Omanhene Kwabena Asante has triggered widespread discussion after reportedly backing the idea of former President John Dramani Mahama being allowed to serve a third presidential term.
During an appearance on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen programme, Omanhene reportedly argued that there was nothing inherently wrong with Mahama seeking another term, stressing that the will of the people should carry significant weight in determining who leads the country.
He further suggested that experienced leadership could help Ghana tackle unemployment, economic hardship and governance challenges.
The comments have renewed debate over the presidential term limits established by Ghana’s 1992 Constitution. Under the existing rules, a person cannot be elected president more than twice.
Any effort to amend this provision would have to comply with the constitution’s amendment requirements, which may include parliamentary approval and a referendum, depending on the provision concerned.
Those in favour of Omanhene’s argument maintain that experienced leaders should have another opportunity to govern if the public supports them.
They also cite aspects of Mahama’s previous administration, including infrastructure projects, educational programmes and economic initiatives, as reasons for considering his leadership record.
On the other hand, critics, including members and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), have cautioned against changing the existing restrictions.
They believe presidential term limits are essential for protecting democratic institutions, preventing the excessive accumulation of power and encouraging peaceful leadership transitions.
The proposal has divided opinion online, with some Ghanaians supporting further discussion while others maintain that the constitution should remain unchanged.
For now, Mahama has not publicly announced plans to seek a third term under a changed constitutional framework in response to the debate.
The controversy highlights the tension between calls for experienced leadership and the need to preserve constitutional safeguards.
Regardless of public opinion, any attempt to change Ghana’s presidential term limits must follow the legally established amendment process.
