Bauchi Imam Removed for Campaigning for Tinubu During Sermons

Imam Dahiru Abubakar of a mosque in Madina quarters, Bauchi metropolis, has been removed from his position after repeatedly campaigning for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election during sermons.

According to worshippers, Abubakar often told congregants after obligatory prayers that Tinubu was not responsible for Nigeria’s insecurity and deserved another mandate in 2027.

His suspension followed similar remarks made after the early morning prayer on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters, Abubakar defended his preaching, saying he urged worshippers to stop blaming leaders for insecurity, which he described as a global crisis requiring divine intervention.

He argued that Tinubu should not be held solely responsible for Nigeria’s challenges.

However, the mosque committee said his actions violated the sanctity of the mosque. Chairman Imam Abubakar Jibrin explained that the committee had cautioned him several times against turning the mosque into a political platform.

“The mosque is solely for worship. Politics should be conducted through party offices, not in places of prayer,” Jibrin stated.

Committee members also rejected Abubakar’s proposal to rename the mosque after President Tinubu, insisting it would remain Masjid Abdullahi Bin Zubbair.

Jibrin added that the imam’s removal was final, urging him to build his own mosque if he wished to mix politics with religion.

The committee stressed that it was not against any political candidate, but maintained that mosques must remain neutral spaces dedicated to worship.
