Ruto Hands Over COMESA Chairmanship to Zimbabwe’s Mnangagwa After One Year Term
President William Ruto has concluded his one year term as chairperson of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) handing over leadership to Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The leadership change marks a new chapter for the regional organisation which brings together African countries seeking to strengthen trade investment and economic cooperation.
During his tenure Ruto represented Kenya in efforts to advance regional integration and improve cooperation among member states. COMESA provides a platform for countries to address trade barriers expand markets and create opportunities for businesses across the region.
The organisation also seeks to make it easier for goods and services to move between member countries helping businesses reach customers beyond their national borders.
Mnangagwa now takes responsibility for guiding the bloc’s activities during his chairmanship. His leadership comes as African countries continue exploring ways to increase trade among themselves and strengthen economic ties.
The transition is important for businesses and ordinary citizens who depend on regional markets for income and employment. Farmers, manufacturers and traders stand to benefit from stronger cross border trade and improved access to customers.
Kenya remains an important player in regional economic cooperation with businesses looking beyond the domestic market for new opportunities.
COMESA continues to work towards greater economic integration among its member states.
As Mnangagwa takes over attention will turn to the organisation’s priorities particularly expanding trade supporting businesses and improving economic cooperation across Eastern and Southern Africa.
