She Told Me She Was in the Hospital, I Never Knew It Would Be Our Last Call—Christy Mourns Mabel
Ghanaian gospel musician Obaapa Christy has shared an emotional account of her final conversation with Mabel Adwoa Intuah, popularly known as Auntie Mabel, the late sister of actress Vivian Jill Lawrence.
The singer revealed that she spoke with Mabel shortly before her death and had no idea that their conversation would be their last. She recalled that Mabel told her she was in the hospital, but she did not realise the seriousness of her condition at the time.
According to Obaapa Christy, the two shared a close relationship, with Mabel playing an important role in her personal and professional life. She described the deceased as a supportive friend who regularly helped her by connecting her with influential people and creating opportunities for her.
The gospel musician explained that she had spent time with Mabel just days before her passing. During their interactions, she had asked Mabel for some favours, and the latter had willingly agreed to help her. Their friendship was built on trust, generosity and regular communication.
Obaapa Christy said she became concerned when she learnt that Mabel had been admitted to the hospital. However, Mabel did not disclose the details of her illness, as both women expected to meet again after she returned home.
Sadly, that anticipated meeting never happened. The singer said she was devastated when she received the news of Mabel’s death the following day, leaving her struggling to accept the sudden loss of someone who had been a significant source of support in her life.
Mabel, who was the founder of the fashion brand Mayan Stitches, died in July 2026 at the age of 50, just weeks after celebrating her birthday. Her death prompted an outpouring of tributes from family members, friends, celebrities and others who knew her.
Obaapa Christy’s account has added to the tributes celebrating Mabel’s life and the relationships she built. Her recollection also highlights the pain of losing someone unexpectedly, particularly when there is no opportunity for a final meeting or proper goodbye.
As family members and loved ones continue to mourn, Mabel is being remembered for her generosity, friendship and the support she offered to those around her.
