South Africa Announces R10 Billion Fuel Relief: Petrol and Diesel Levies Set for Cuts From November

South African motorists have received some welcome news after Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced a temporary R10 billion fuel-levy relief package aimed at easing pressure on households and businesses.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, during the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement presented to Parliament. According to the South African Government News Agency, the planned reductions will begin on 4 November and initially remain in place until 1 December 2026.

Under the announced measures, the general fuel levy will be reduced by R1.50 per litre for petrol and R3 per litre for diesel during the first period. From after 1 December until 5 January 2027, the relief will continue at a lower level, with petrol receiving a R1-per-litre reduction and diesel a R1.50-per-litre reduction.

The package comes as rising fuel costs place pressure on transport expenses, household budgets and businesses that depend on road freight. Lower diesel levies may help operators manage some of their costs, while petrol users could benefit from the temporary reduction.

However, motorists should not assume that the levy reduction guarantees an identical fall in the final pump price. International oil prices, exchange-rate movements and other fuel-price components can also affect what consumers pay.

The government says the R10 billion package will be funded through money returned from the Central Energy Fund to the National Revenue Fund. The measure is temporary, and the announced relief is scheduled to end on 5 January 2027.

Why it matters: The relief could provide short-term breathing room for motorists and businesses during a period of high living costs, although it will not resolve all the factors behind expensive fuel.

Question for readers: Will these temporary fuel-levy cuts make a meaningful difference to your household budget?
