Katsande Proud of His First Season as a Coach in Zimbabwe’s Second Division

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande is making progress in his coaching career in Zimbabwe, describing his first season in professional football management as a positive experience.

The former Amakhosi star has begun building his reputation on the touchline after moving into coaching following his playing career. Although the transition from being a professional footballer to managing a team presents different challenges, Katsande believes his early achievements show that he is moving in the right direction.

Katsande revealed that his first season coaching adult professional football has been a valuable learning experience. He also highlighted the recognition he has received during the campaign, including two Coach of the Month awards.

Reflecting on his progress, Katsande said he was satisfied with what he had achieved in his first year in the role.

“It was a good rookie year for me, first time coaching professional, adult football. If you look at where I am, I’ve won two Coach of the Month awards, it’s a success for me,” he said.

The two awards represent an encouraging start for Katsande as he continues to establish himself in the coaching profession. For someone beginning a new career after years of playing at the highest level, receiving such recognition can provide motivation to keep improving.

During his playing days, Katsande was known for his commitment, physical presence and determination in midfield. He became a familiar figure among Kaizer Chiefs supporters and gained valuable experience competing in South African football.

His time as a player would have exposed him to different coaching methods, dressing-room dynamics and the demands of professional competition. However, becoming a coach requires a different set of skills, including tactical planning, player management, decision-making and the ability to communicate ideas effectively.

Katsande must now demonstrate that he can transfer the knowledge gained during his playing career into his work on the touchline. His early recognition suggests that he has made a promising start, although continued development will be important as he takes on greater responsibilities.

Coaching in Zimbabwe also gives him an opportunity to contribute to the development of football in his home country. By working with players at the second-division level, he can gain practical experience while helping his team pursue its objectives.

For Katsande, the first season appears to have provided both valuable lessons and encouraging achievements. Winning two Coach of the Month awards is a milestone he can take pride in, particularly as he continues learning the demands of professional coaching.

While much work remains in building a long-term coaching career, Katsande’s positive assessment of his debut season shows that he is determined to make his mark beyond his playing days. His next challenge will be to build on this foundation and continue proving himself as a coach in Zimbabwean football.
