Ebola: FG Urge Nigerians To Embrace Self-Care Practices To Contain Outbreak
The Federal Government has urged Nigerians to prioritise personal hygiene and responsible self-care practices following reports of an imported Ebola virus case in Abuja, as authorities intensify efforts to prevent the potential spread of the disease.
According to a report by The Daily Post on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, made the appeal during the inaugural National Self-Care Conference 2026 in Abuja.
The conference was held under the theme “Self-Care Puts Your Health in Your Hands: Test. Track. Thrive,” bringing together stakeholders to discuss ways of improving healthcare access and encouraging individuals to take greater responsibility for their wellbeing.
Addressing participants, Salako stressed that personal responsibility was essential to controlling infectious diseases. He urged Nigerians to observe basic hygiene practices, including regular handwashing and appropriate disinfection, while cooperating with health authorities responding to the reported Ebola case.
The minister explained that self-care enables individuals to make informed health decisions and take appropriate steps to protect themselves beyond traditional hospital settings. However, he clarified that these practices should complement professional medical services rather than replace clinical treatment or relieve the government of its healthcare responsibilities.
Also speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the President on Health, Dr. Salma Anas, highlighted the importance of recognising symptoms early and taking appropriate action when health concerns arise.
Anas maintained that individuals should understand their health needs and seek professional medical attention when necessary. She also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding universal health coverage while continuing to fulfil its obligations to citizens.
Representatives of the World Health Organization and the Society for Family Health also supported the self-care initiative, pointing to the potential benefits of telemedicine, self-testing and health monitoring in improving access to services, particularly in underserved communities.
The conference comes amid concerns about the reported Ebola case, underscoring the importance of public awareness and cooperation with health authorities.
Members of the public should follow official guidance, avoid direct contact with suspected cases or their bodily fluids, and promptly seek medical advice if they develop symptoms or believe they have been exposed. The reported case and any subsequent developments should be confirmed through official public health announcements.
