South Africa Cuts 2026 Growth Forecast to 1.2% as Government Announces R10 Billion Fuel Relief
South Africa’s government has lowered its economic growth forecast for 2026 while announcing a temporary fuel-levy relief package worth R10 billion, as households and businesses continue to face pressure from rising costs.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced the measures while presenting the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement in Parliament on Wednesday, 21 October 2026. National Treasury revised its growth projection to 1.2%, down from the 1.6% forecast made in February. The government expects growth to improve to 1.6% in 2027 and reach 2% by 2029.
The minister cited global economic uncertainty, including conflict in the Middle East and the potential impact of El Niño on production costs and output, as risks to the country’s economic outlook. The latest figures underline the challenge facing the government as it tries to encourage economic activity while maintaining control over public finances.
One of the most immediate announcements concerns fuel prices. According to reporting by Eyewitness News, the government has allocated R10 billion for temporary fuel-levy relief. The plan includes a reduction of R3 per litre for diesel and R1.50 per litre for petrol from 4 November until 1 December, followed by a lower level of relief until 5 January 2027.
The announcement could offer temporary breathing room for motorists, transport operators and businesses affected by fuel costs. However, the intervention is not a permanent solution to the wider cost-of-living challenge.
Why it matters: Slower growth can affect job creation and business confidence, while fuel prices influence transport and the cost of many everyday goods.
What do you think? Will temporary fuel-levy relief make a meaningful difference to South African households?
