Suliman Carrim Set to Appear at Musina Magistrates’ Court in Limpopo
North West businessman Suliman Carrim is expected to appear in the Musina Magistrates’ Court in Limpopo on Thursday. The National Prosecuting Authority has confirmed that he will face charges linked to the alleged attempted theft of two motor vehicles belonging to Absa Bank.
According to reports, Carrim is accused of working with his employees to try and move the vehicles out of the country using fraudulent documents. The vehicles were still under finance agreements with the bank at the time. Police intercepted the cars at the Beitbridge Border Post on 22 July this year. Two other suspects were arrested during the operation and remain in custody. The vehicles, which had been transported from Mahikeng in the North West and were allegedly heading to Malawi via Zimbabwe, were later returned to Absa.
Carrim is already behind bars following his arrest at OR Tambo International Airport on 15 October. He was stopped as he prepared to board an international flight to Dubai. That arrest relates to charges of contravening the Commissions Act after he repeatedly failed to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, despite being subpoenaed. The state has opposed his bail application in that matter, describing him as a flight risk. A decision on bail is still pending.
The new charges in Musina add to a growing list of legal problems for the former ANC regional treasurer. He is also the subject of an investigation by the Special Investigating Unit into multimillion-rand transport contracts awarded in the North West. Authorities have not yet provided full details of the docket in the vehicle case, but the National Prosecuting Authority says Carrim will face counts of attempted theft and money laundering.
The two suspects arrested at Beitbridge earlier this year are scheduled to appear in the Musina Regional Court on 27 October. Carrim’s appearance on Thursday is expected to deal with the charges that have now been added against him in the same matter. The case forms part of a wider investigation that has placed the North West businessman under increasing scrutiny from both the police and the Madlanga Commission.
