I Remember When There Were Fuel Queues,We Were Buying A Litre Of Fuel For ₦3,000,Some ₦2,500-Afegbua
Prince Kazeem Afegbua, Edo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, urging Nigerians to remember the fuel scarcity and long queues experienced in previous years when assessing the president’s performance.
Afegbua made the remarks during an interview with SYMFONI TV on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, where he discussed the availability of petrol and the difficulties Nigerians previously faced while trying to purchase the product. The commissioner argued that people often forget the challenges associated with fuel scarcity, insisting that motorists once spent several days waiting in queues at filling stations before they could obtain petrol for their vehicles.
According to him, the current situation is different because motorists can now find petrol at filling stations without necessarily enduring the prolonged queues that characterised previous periods of scarcity.
Afegbua said Nigerians should consider this change when evaluating the administration, noting that the experience of searching for fuel was once a major source of frustration for motorists across the country.
He stated: “People tend to be in a hurry to forget that fuel queues were the order of the day. People queue up days on end to looking for petrol for their vehicles. If you go to filling stations now they are even calling you to come and buy fuel. I remember when there were fuel queues we were buying a litre for ₦3000 some ₦2500.”
The commissioner used his recollection of previous fuel scarcity to support his argument that Nigerians should not overlook improvements in fuel availability when discussing the country’s current economic challenges.
He maintained that the experience of motorists in the past, when queues stretched for hours or even days, should form part of the conversation about the performance of the present government.
Afegbua’s comments come amid continued public debate over the economic policies introduced by Tinubu since he assumed office in May 2023, particularly the removal of the petrol subsidy.
