Broda Shaggi opens up on trauma, recovery after stray bullet injury
Nollywood actor and comedian Samuel Perry, popularly known as Broda Shaggi, has opened up about the emotional and physical challenges he faced after sustaining a stray bullet injury that kept him away from social media and acting for several months.
The comedian said the incident left him uncertain about his future in the entertainment industry and fearful that his fans might forget him during his prolonged absence.
Speaking in a YouTube video uploaded to his channel on Wednesday night, Shaggi recounted how he was injured in March 2026 while filming a comedy skit under the Sango-Ota bridge in Nigeria.
He said the incident occurred on a Sunday afternoon and left him overwhelmed with fear as he saw blood and waited for medical attention.
“I was totally unconscious till I got to the hospital. So, I didn’t even know how we got to the hospital. But one thing I could remember was me praying till we got to the first hospital where first aid was administered,” he said.
Shaggi recalled that he was sweating and holding his injured leg while desperately hoping to hear reassurance from medical personnel that he would survive.
“A lot was happening at the same time. I was sweating. I was holding my leg, you know, I was seeing blood and all I wanted to hear was a doctor or a nurse telling me Samuel, you’ll be fine,” he recounted.
The actor said the injury also raised concerns about whether he would be able to continue his career, particularly because dancing, singing and other physical performances were central to his work.
He recalled worrying about how he would dance, sing and play the drums if he could no longer use his leg.
Shaggi explained that he had maintained a demanding work schedule since 2018, moving between writing, filming, music production and travelling for engagements without taking significant breaks.
“Since 2018 till date I never rest. It’s always back to back. If I’m not writing I’m shooting. If I’m not shooting, I’m in the studio making music. If I’m not making music, I’m travelling for something,” he said.
He said being away from the industry for an extended period made him anxious about losing his audience and relevance.
Despite his condition, the comedian tried to remain productive during his hospitalisation by writing and starting a YouTube series.
However, he said watching his colleagues continue to create content and entertain audiences sometimes left him emotional because he was unsure whether he would regain the ability to perform as before.
“There were moments where I would see videos of my colleagues. I would laugh and sometimes I would just start to cry because I wasn’t sure if I would still be able to do all these things they doing again,” he said.
Shaggi disclosed that he initially underwent surgery in Nigeria but was informed that he required further treatment and physiotherapy.
After about four months, he decided to seek additional treatment in Dubai, where he said his recovery improved significantly following another operation.
According to him, he was able to stand with support on the second day after the procedure and walk with crutches on the third day.
He said he could now stand without crutches and walk with assistance, although he still relied on the walking aids as part of his recovery.
Reflecting on the incident, Shaggi expressed gratitude for surviving the shooting, noting that the bullet could have struck a more vital part of his body.
“It was a stray bullet and it came this way to my hip. What if it had come this way and hit my head or hit any vital organ?” he said.
The comedian described his survival as a second chance at life and assured fans that he was preparing to return to their screens with new projects.
“I’m grateful to be alive. It’s second chance. You should also be grateful to have Shaggy back on your screen because right now I’m coming with exciting projects,” he said.
