How a stray bullet kept me away for months – Broda Shaggi recounts ordeal

Popular skit maker and actor, Samuel Perry, widely known as Broda Shaggi, has opened up on how a gunshot injury forced him off work for months and left him battling fear and uncertainty.

The comedian gave a detailed account of the incident in a YouTube video posted Wednesday night.

It will be recalled that Broda Shaggi was reportedly hit by a stray bullet in March 2026 while shooting a comedy skit under the bridge in Sango-Ota on a Sunday afternoon.

Though the exact circumstances of the shooting were sketchy, a police source who did not want to be named because he lacked authorisation to speak on the matter disclosed that the entertainer suffered a gunshot wound.

The Ogun State Police Command, in its initial reaction, said it could not ascertain whether the incident happened within its jurisdiction.

Its spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, cautioned against circulating unverified reports while investigations were ongoing.

Speaking on what transpired, Broda Shaggi said he was out for a regular brand activation job when the bullet hit him.

He said panic set in immediately as he bled profusely and waited to be attended to by medical personnel.

“I was totally unconscious till I got to the hospital. So I didn’t even know how we got there. But one thing I could remember was me praying till we got to the first hospital where first aid was administered,” he recounted.

On how he felt at that moment, he said, “A lot was happening at the same time. I was sweating. I was holding my leg, you know, I was seeing blood, and all I wanted to hear was a doctor or a nurse telling me Samuel, you’ll be fine.”

According to him, one of his biggest concerns was whether his career could survive the setback, given that physical activities such as dancing, singing and drumming are central to his brand.

He admitted he kept asking himself how he would cope with his performances if his leg failed him.

The comic actor explained that he had been on a non-stop work routine since 2018.

“Since 2018 till date, I never rest. It’s always back-to-back. If I’m not writing I’m shooting. If I’m not shooting, I’m in the studio making music. If I’m not making music, I’m travelling for something,” he stated.

He said the long break from work triggered fear that his fans might move on.

While in hospital, he said he tried to stay productive by writing and launching a YouTube series, even though he remained anxious about the future.

“There were moments where I would see videos of my colleagues. I would laugh, and sometimes I would start to cry because I wasn’t sure if I would still be able to do all these things they’re doing again,” he said.

Broda Shaggi said he had surgery in Nigeria but needed additional medical care and physiotherapy. About four months later, he travelled to Dubai for further treatment.

He said his condition improved significantly after the procedure abroad, as he could stand with support on the second day and walk with crutches by the third day.

Looking back, the entertainer said he was thankful the bullet hit his hip and not a more sensitive part of his body.

“It was a stray bullet, and it came this way to my hip. What if it had come this way and hit my head or hit any vital organ?” he said.

In his current state, he noted that although he still uses crutches, he has made remarkable progress.

“I’m still using my crutches for now. But there was a period where I couldn’t move without the two crutches. I couldn’t even put my leg on the floor, you know. But now I can walk. I can stand alone without crutches, but I still have to support myself with the crutches,” he explained.

He described his survival as a second chance and assured fans he’d return with fresh content.

“I’m grateful to be alive. It’s a second chance. You should also be grateful to have Shaggi back on your screen because right now I’m coming with exciting projects,” he added.
