UNIVEN Graduate Matome Moholola Lands Powerful ATNS CEO Job in Major South African Aviation Appointment

South Africa’s aviation sector is set for a new chapter after Matome Moholola, an alumnus of the University of Venda (UNIVEN), was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) SOC Limited for a five-year fixed term.

Moholola will officially assume the position on 1 November 2026, following more than a year serving as acting CEO. His appointment represents a significant career milestone and a moment of pride for UNIVEN, which has congratulated its former student on securing one of the country’s important leadership positions in aviation.

The appointment also comes at a critical time for ATNS as the organisation works to strengthen leadership stability, improve stakeholder confidence and advance its operational priorities.

ATNS plays an essential role in South Africa’s aviation industry by providing air traffic management and navigation services that support the safe and efficient movement of aircraft through the country’s airspace.

Moholola’s professional journey highlights how a strong academic foundation, combined with years of experience, can open doors to senior leadership.

He began his academic journey at the University of Venda, where he obtained a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting. He later expanded his qualifications through further studies at other respected institutions.

His academic achievements include a Bachelor of Accountancy, a Master of Commerce in Taxation and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). He is also a Chartered Accountant of South Africa (CA(SA)).

His qualifications have provided him with a foundation in financial management, taxation, business strategy and corporate governance.

UNIVEN has celebrated his appointment as an example of the contribution its graduates continue to make in leadership positions across South Africa’s economy.

Moholola joined ATNS in July 2011 as Senior Finance Manager, a position he held for approximately six years before being promoted to Chief Financial Officer in October 2017.

His progression through the organisation gave him substantial exposure to its financial operations, management structures and strategic responsibilities.

Before joining ATNS, he served as a director at National Treasury. His earlier professional experience included positions as Chief Accountant at Johnson Diversey and Head Office Accountant at Maxiprest Tyres.

This combination of public-sector and private-sector experience has helped shape his expertise in financial management, risk management, supply chain management and corporate governance.

In March 2025, Moholola took over as acting CEO, giving him direct experience of leading the organisation before the board confirmed his permanent appointment.

ATNS board chairperson Zola Majavu welcomed Moholola’s appointment, expressing confidence in his ability to guide the organisation through a period of stabilisation and renewal.

Majavu highlighted Moholola’s commitment, resilience and understanding of the challenges facing the organisation.

The board also expects the appointment to support leadership continuity and make it easier to fill key executive positions that have been operating under acting arrangements.
