Swallows Supporters Call for Meeting With Walter Mokoena
Concerned and surprised by recent developments surrounding the revival of the historic Soweto club, Moroka Swallows supporter Bafana “Congo” Malekutu has spoken out. According to him, fans want to know what’s in store for their team.
Walter Mokoena, a South African businessman and broadcaster, has stepped in to revive the club and rebrand it as Moroka Swallows SC. As the club aims to get back into competitive football after a tough patch, the move has garnered attention.
Due to severe financial difficulties, the Dube Birds sold their Premier Soccer League status to Marumo Gallants in 2024, and since then, they have not played in the top division of football. The club has a rich history in South African football and was just celebrating its 79th anniversary; many of its supporters would like to see it reclaim its previous prominence.
Mokoena is collaborating with Joel “Ace” Mnini, a club legend, to help Swallows return to the lower divisions. But Malekutu claims he was surprised to hear the news because he had no idea the new squad even existed.
Last Friday, he learned about Moroka Swallows SC when he began to receive calls from people asking if he would accompany them to a match at Milpark. The presence of the Moroka Swallows in the lower divisions caught him off guard, he admitted.
The only Swallows team he was aware of, he continued, was the Legends squad, which featured ex-players like Steve Sekano and Lefa Tsutsulupa.
He went on to say that he is acquainted with the campaign’s leadership. Malekutu claims that this week, representatives from the supporters’ leadership will meet with Mokoena to review the current state of affairs and gather further details regarding the revival plans.
The possibility of the club’s return was something he was happy about, but he did say that those planning the revival should consult with fans and use the proper channels.
He thinks supporters of a certain team should not have to wait for news stories to find out what’s happening with them. According to him, everyone is confused about what to do, but that those who truly want to bring Moroka Swallows back will have the support of their supporters.
Another thing Malekutu said was that fans in South Africa don’t want to see two clubs with the same name. The original club certificate is in the possession of someone else, he said, adding another layer of complexity. He emphasized that the restoration and protection of the original Moroka Swallows, without any uncertainty regarding the club’s identity, should be the top priority for supporters.
