Kenyans React as Details Emerge on the Government Position Ruto Gave ODM Ahead of 2027 — Details

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has called on Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders to remain united, saying the party’s political strength will be important in protecting its influence in the government.

Wanga said President William Ruto had given ODM the position of Minister of Finance, arguing that the party must remain strong if it hopes to retain the powerful government position.

“President Ruto gave us a Minister of Finance. For us to retain that Finance ministry, ODM must remain strong,” Wanga stated.

Her remarks come as ODM continues to define its political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election following the death of its longtime leader, Raila Odinga, in October 2025.

The party has been facing internal disagreements, with different leaders expressing varying views about its relationship with the government and the best way to prepare for the next election.

Wanga, who serves as ODM’s national chairperson, has repeatedly urged members to protect the party’s structures and maintain unity as they prepare for the polls.

On October 18, ODM leaders reaffirmed their plan to support President Ruto’s re-election while seeking to win parliamentary, senatorial, gubernatorial and other elective seats under the party’s ticket.

The arrangement has placed ODM in a position where it must balance cooperation with the government and its ambition to remain a strong political force across the country.

Wanga’s latest remarks highlight the importance some party leaders attach to maintaining ODM’s influence within the broad-based government.

The Finance portfolio is particularly important because the National Treasury oversees government finances, including budget preparation, public spending and economic policy. However, Wanga’s statement does not establish that ODM has secured the position for the next government or that it is guaranteed to retain it.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, ODM leaders will face the task of keeping their supporters together while negotiating their political future.
