Trump Puts a Price on Exposing Fraud: Whistleblowers Offered a Share of the Loot

US President Donald Trump has unveiled an ambitious new initiative aimed at turning ordinary Americans, journalists and whistleblowers into a frontline force against fraud in government programmes.

Under the new Fraud Whistleblower Incentive Program, people who provide information that helps authorities uncover and prosecute fraud could receive financial rewards.

Trump said whistleblowers could receive a commission equivalent to one per cent of the money uncovered, potentially turning major fraud discoveries into life-changing payouts.

“If you report and you find $1 billion, we are giving a commission to that person of 1%,” Trump said during the programme’s launch at the White House.

That would translate to $10 million for a successful tip involving $1 billion in fraud.

However, the formal rules announced by the US Department of Justice provide for initial payments ranging from $10,000 to $30,000 for qualifying information that leads to criminal charges.

The department said awards are discretionary and depend on the requirements of the programme.

The initiative has received an initial $25 million commitment from the US Treasury and will be administered by the Justice Department.

It targets suspected fraud involving federal healthcare programmes and government benefits administered by several agencies.

Priority areas include healthcare fraud, hospice and home healthcare schemes, daycare fraud and misuse of government assistance programmes.

Trump also indicated that journalists could participate, provided they meet applicable rules and obtain any necessary approval from their media organisations.

The move could significantly expand the pool of people investigating suspected misuse of taxpayer funds.

The programme’s launch was accompanied by recognition of Nick Shirley, a conservative YouTuber whose reporting on alleged fraud at Minnesota childcare centres drew national attention.

The administration announced a $10,000 reward for his work, although some of the claims surrounding the centres have been disputed and should not be treated as established facts without supporting evidence.

Vice President JD Vance, who heads the administration’s anti-fraud task force, said the programme would give Americans an incentive to help protect taxpayer money.

The initiative now places a potentially powerful weapon in the hands of whistleblowers.

Whether it will uncover billions in genuine fraud or trigger disputes over accusations, evidence and reward claims will depend on how the programme is implemented and scrutinised.
