Jonathan Urges Nigeria to Shift from Imports to Local Production

According to reports by Vanguard on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, former President Goodluck Jonathan has called on Nigeria to develop the resources and technology needed to produce goods and services locally rather than continue depending heavily on imports.

Jonathan made the appeal while commissioning the Zeetin Technologies plant in Idu, Abuja. The facility manufactures tricycles for the Nigerian market. He stressed that true economic growth and job creation will only come when the country prioritises domestic production and reduces its reliance on foreign goods.

The former President noted that Nigeria has the capacity, human resources and market size to support local manufacturing across several sectors. He urged government, private investors and young entrepreneurs to focus on building industries that can meet local demand and eventually compete internationally.

The commissioning of the tricycle manufacturing plant was presented as an example of the kind of investment the country needs. Jonathan expressed hope that more such projects would emerge, creating employment opportunities and strengthening the naira by reducing the demand for foreign exchange used for imports.

His comments come at a time when many Nigerians are concerned about the high cost of living and the impact of import dependence on the economy. The call for a stronger shift towards local production has been welcomed by stakeholders who believe that industrialisation remains key to sustainable development and economic resilience.
