Arteta Keeps Trusting Rice, but Arsenal’s Midfield Depth Is Raising an Uncomfortable Question
There is a growing question among Arsenal supporters about Mikel Arteta’s apparent reluctance to rest Declan Rice, especially when the club has invested in quality midfielders capable of taking some of the responsibility off his shoulders.
Rice has established himself as one of Arsenal’s most dependable performers, combining defensive discipline with powerful forward runs, intelligent positioning and an increasing contribution to the attack.
However, the concern is no longer whether Rice deserves his place in the starting eleven, but whether Arteta trusts his alternatives enough to give the England international meaningful rest across a demanding season.
Martin Zubimendi is hardly an inexperienced prospect who needs to be protected from difficult fixtures, having arrived at Arsenal with a reputation as an accomplished defensive midfielder who can dictate possession and provide structure from deep.
His qualities should allow Arteta to adjust the balance of the midfield without necessarily sacrificing control, particularly in matches where Arsenal can afford to rotate or when Rice needs to recover.
The problem is that Arteta appears to place enormous importance on Rice’s ability to influence several phases of a match, making him reluctant to change a formula that has delivered consistent results.
Rice can protect the defence, carry the ball through midfield and arrive in dangerous attacking positions, giving Arsenal a level of versatility that is difficult to reproduce with a straightforward like-for-like substitution.
Yet that dependence could become a problem if Arsenal continue asking him to shoulder such a heavy workload, especially after a previous campaign in which his appearances for club and country raised concerns about fatigue.
There is also a bigger question about what happens to the fringe players when they rarely receive meaningful opportunities in the matches that matter.
Players cannot establish themselves as reliable alternatives if they are only introduced when Arsenal are already comfortable or when injuries leave Arteta with no other choice.
Giving Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and Myles Lewis-Skelly more responsibility would allow the manager to assess their performances under different tactical demands while making the squad less dependent on a handful of regular starters.
It would also encourage competition, because no player should feel that his place is guaranteed regardless of the demands of the schedule.
That does not mean Arteta should rest Rice simply to satisfy supporters, since selection must still reflect the opponent, the player’s fitness and the importance of the fixture.
However, there is a difference between rewarding consistency and becoming overly dependent on one player, and Arsenal must be careful not to cross that line.
The manager has previously shown that he values players who can maintain high standards across a long season, but effective rotation is also part of building a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts.
If Arsenal want their alternatives to be trusted when injuries or fatigue eventually strike, Arteta must give them enough responsibility to prove they belong at the highest level.
Rice should remain central to Arsenal’s plans, but the club’s investment in midfield depth must mean something beyond having quality names available on the bench.
Ultimately, the real test of Arteta’s management will be whether he can maintain Arsenal’s competitive standards without relying on the same players in every important match.
Because if even a well-stocked midfield cannot give Rice adequate rest, supporters are entitled to ask what the club must do before the manager finally trusts his other options.
