Mahama Reveals Russia Visit Agenda, Says He Will Try to Convince Putin on Ukraine Ceasefire

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to engage Russian President Vladimir Putin in an effort to secure a ceasefire in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war during his planned visit to Russia for the Russia-Africa Summit.

Mahama disclosed this during an interview at the Financial Times Africa Summit in London, where he discussed Russia’s military involvement in the Sahel region and the importance of international cooperation in combating terrorism.

Addressing questions about Russian military units providing support to some governments in the Sahel, the Ghanaian leader maintained that countries should be allowed to seek assistance from any partner willing to contribute to the fight against terrorism.

He pointed to Ghana’s security partnerships with the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the United States, explaining that these relationships involve intelligence sharing and joint military training to strengthen the country’s counterterrorism capabilities.

The President also reaffirmed Ghana’s non-alignment policy, emphasising the country’s commitment to maintaining cordial relations with major global powers, regardless of their geopolitical differences.

Against this backdrop, Mahama revealed that he intends to use his upcoming trip to Russia as an opportunity to hold discussions with Putin about ending hostilities in Ukraine.

He indicated that he would appeal to the Russian leader to consider a ceasefire as part of broader efforts to bring the conflict to an end.

The proposed engagement comes amid continued international efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the war, which began in February 2022 after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

As of October 2026, efforts to achieve a ceasefire and advance negotiations remain ongoing.
