List of 146 Senior Leaders and Lawyers Eyeing Top Legal Honour, Deputy President Among Them

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is among 146 lawyers seeking elevation to the prestigious rank of Senior Counsel, alongside veteran advocates John Khaminwa and Gitobu Imanyara, Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga and several prominent former state officials.

The list brings together some of Kenya’s most recognisable figures in law, politics and public service, setting the stage for a closely watched selection process within the legal profession.

Also seeking the coveted title are Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, former National Assembly Speakers Francis ole Kaparo and Kenneth Marende, as well as retired judge Philip Waki.

The presence of serving government officials, experienced advocates and former parliamentary leaders makes the list notable, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of those seeking recognition for their legal careers and contributions to the profession.

Khaminwa and Imanyara stand out as veteran lawyers with decades of experience in Kenya’s legal landscape. Their inclusion places two familiar names in the profession among the applicants seeking the distinguished designation.

Kindiki’s application is equally notable given his position as Deputy President and his background in law. Ingonga, who heads the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, is another senior public official seeking the honour.

The Senior Counsel rank is among the highest professional distinctions available to advocates in Kenya. It recognises legal practitioners who meet the prescribed requirements and have demonstrated distinction in their professional practice.

However, submitting an application does not automatically guarantee appointment. The 146 applicants must undergo the relevant selection process before those who qualify can be elevated to the rank.

The final outcome will determine which of the applicants earn the prestigious designation, bringing recognition to their standing and contributions within Kenya’s legal profession.
