Ebola Outbreak: NCDC Reveals Patient’s Condition Has Worsened to Multi-Organ Failure

According to a report by The Daily Post on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has disclosed that the condition of the Ebola patient being treated in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has worsened.

Speaking at an emergency meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, the Director of Public Health Laboratory Service at the NCDC, Olajumoke Babatunde, said the patient, a diplomat, has now developed multi-organ failure.

She confirmed that the case is the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, the same one responsible for the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to her, three levels of molecular tests were carried out to establish the strain.

“The patient’s condition has deteriorated. We did three levels of tests, but all were molecular. The strain was Bundibugyo,” she said.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has also confirmed the strain. At present, there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for Bundibugyo Ebola.

The patient is a woman who travelled from Uganda to Abuja on October 3, 2026. She was admitted to a private hospital in the FCT, where doctors first treated her for symptoms similar to malaria before Ebola was suspected.

The Incident Manager of the National Ebola Response, Dr Odianosen Ehiakhamen, explained that she developed symptoms on October 7 and presented at the hospital on October 11.

The NCDC said 44 close contacts have been identified and are being monitored. They include health workers, other patients, caregivers and people who travelled with her. Officials say all of them are being followed up closely.

The agency added that the patient is in isolation and receiving medical care, while surveillance has been stepped up. Health authorities say the measures are aimed at preventing any further spread of the disease.
