Joseph Makhanya confirms his next destination after leaving Orlando Pirates
Former Orlando Pirates development coach Joseph Makhanya has returned to the spotlight following his departure from Pele Pele FC, the club’s ABC Motsepe League feeder team, raising questions about his next move in South African football.
Makhanya, popularly known as Duku Duku, joined Pele Pele FC in September 2025 after previously working with Orlando Pirates’ DStv Diski Challenge reserve team. His appointment was expected to help the club compete for promotion while allowing him to continue developing young players and preparing them for higher levels of football.
However, his time at the club has now come to an end. Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Issa Sarr, who worked alongside Makhanya as an assistant coach, has also departed Pele Pele FC.
Following their exits, Orlando Pirates have reportedly reorganised the technical team, with Vincent Rammoni taking charge of the ABC Motsepe League side for the 2026/27 season. The changes mark a new chapter for the development team as it continues its efforts to nurture emerging talent.
Makhanya leaves behind a reputation built during his time within the Orlando Pirates development structures, where he played an important role in identifying and shaping promising footballers.
Several players who progressed through the club’s development system, including Relebohile Mofokeng, Mohau Nkota and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, have gone on to establish themselves at senior level. Their progress highlights the importance of youth development in creating opportunities for talented players to compete professionally.
Throughout his coaching career, Makhanya has emphasised that developing young footballers should involve more than simply winning matches. He believes coaches must prepare youngsters for the demands of professional football by improving their technical abilities, tactical understanding and overall readiness.
In October 2026, he also shared insights into Orlando Pirates midfielder Simphiwe Masilela, explaining that the youngster’s versatility had been evident during his early development years.
As speculation grows about his next destination, Makhanya remains a respected figure in South African football. Whether he returns to academy coaching or pursues another opportunity, his experience in developing young players could prove valuable to any club seeking to build for the future.
